World Day Against Child Labour

The World Day Against Child Labour was marked on 12 June 2009. Child labour sadly remains a major issue in today’s world, with more than 200 million children estimated to be involved in work that is damaging to their mental, physical and emotional development. Promoting the rights of the child is therefore a priority issue for the FCO.

Uzbekistan is a signatory to UN Conventions on the Rights of the Child, and in 2008 ratified International Labour Organisation Convention 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour and Convention 138 on the Minimum Age for Admission to Employment.

The British Embassy in Tashkent is working with the Uzbek government at national and local levels to assist in the implementation of these international commitments, including through a range of projects:

Enhancement of Social Work

Rural Learning & Production Centres

Training in Care for Newborn Children
