Uzbekistan and UK sign Memorandum on British Council (19/08/2009)

On 19 August 2009 a Memorandum was signed between the Governments of the United Kingdom and Uzbekistan concerning the activity of the British Council in Uzbekistan.

The memorandum was signed on behalf of the British Government by Mr Rupert Joy, Ambassador of the UK to Uzbekistan, and on behalf of the Uzbek Government by Mr Norov, HE the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The ceremony took place within the Ministry in Tashkent and was also attended by the new Director of the British Council, Mr Steve McNulty.

After the ceremony, Mr McNulty said: "I am delighted to see UK-Uzbek relations move one step further with the signing of the Memorandum today. We hope to build on the excellent co-operation that the British Council already enjoys in Uzbekistan in forging educational and cultural ties between our two countries. The British Council is currently involved in a number of key education reform projects and developed strong partnerships with the Ministry of higher and secondary specialised education, Ministry of public education, Fund Forum, Centre of Youth Initiatives Kelazhak Ovozi, Westminster International University in Tashkent, Uzbekistan Association of English Teachers to name a few".

The Ambassador also warmly welcomed the development, noting that "this memorandum will contribute to building trust and understanding between the peoples of our two countries. Though separate entities, the British Embassy and British Council co-operate closely, including in jointly administering the annual Chevening Scholarships scheme, where we offer

opportunities to study in the UK to the very best Uzbek graduates. It gives me great pleasure to see UK-Uzbek co-operation forging ahead through the work of the British Council, and also independently - for example through the Westminster International University in Tashkent. This Uzbek University, working to UK standards and using a UK curriculum, has gone from strength to strength since its launch seven years ago. With 4 of the world's top 10 universities, Britain remains a centre of excellence for education and I believe that stronger UK-Uzbek links in this field will be of mutual benefit."
