How to register a marriage or birth

Marriage registration

Anyone hoping to be married in Uzbekistan should note that Certificates of no impediments (CNI’s) produced by the British Embassy in Tashkent are not currently being accepted by the Legalisation Section of the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Until the Uzbek authorities resume accepting these legal documents, British nationals hoping to be married in Uzbekistan will experience difficulties. Prospective couples should check with the British Embassy before travelling to Uzbekistan, for the purpose of marriage.

PROCEDURE FOR GETTING MARRIED IN UZBEKISTAN

Please read the following info carefully as there are two options available to you:

Option 1
  • the applicant must reside in the consular district where notice of the proposed marriage is to be given for at least 21 clear days before giving notice (to meet this requirement you must have been physically in Uzbekistan for that period (verified from entry stamp in your passport)
  • you will need to complete and sign a Notice of marriage and swear an affidavit. The Notice of marriage will be placed on our notice board at the Consular section for 21clear days. After the notice has been on our board for 21 days without objection to the marriage having been raised, we can issue a Certificate of No Impediment, which is requested by the local Marriage registration office. Certificates of No Impediment are issued in English and Russian.

Note. Certificates of No Impediment cannot be issued in retrospect i.e.

Option2

If you are planing to get married in Uzbekistan and you are not residing in Uzbekistan, you may:
  • Complete and sign a Notice of marriage and swear an affidavit in the district of your residency i.e. The UK. The Notice of marriage will be placed on the notice board for 21 clear days. After the notice has been on the board for 21 days without objection to the marriage having been raised, a Certificate of No Impediment would normally be obtained. You though, will need to notify the office, which has processed your Notice of marriage that you are planning to get married in Uzbekistan. Instead of issuing a Certificate of No Impediment, they should endorse the notice, which has been on their notice board: with, "No impediment shown". They should then sign, date and stamp the endorsement, and either send it to the consular officer in the district where the marriage is to take place or give it to you, the applicant to produce to the Consular section, i.e. the British Embassy Tashkent. On receipt of the endorsed notice and additional fee, a Certificate of No Impediment will be issued by British Embassy Tashkent, which is valid in Uzbekistan.

Consular service fees are as follows:

Notice of marriage

$128

Affidavit

$108

Certificate of No Impediment

$128

Birth registration

The Consular Section of the British Embassy in Tashkent is able to register the birth of a British citizen, which occurred within Uzbekistan.

There is no obligation for the birth of a British national to be recorded in this way. However there are the advantages that a British form of birth certificate is then available, and that a record of the birth is afterwards held at the General Register Office in the United Kingdom.

The fee for birth registration is $199. Certified copy of birth registration can be obtained at a further cost of $128 per certificate.

Before registering the birth we need to see evidence of the national status of the person whose birth is to be registered. Photocopies of document are not acceptable, but original documents will be returned to you as soon as possible. We need to see:

  • The child's full overseas birth certificate naming both of the parents.
  • The father's long birth certificate, or if born outside of United Kingdom, documentary evidence of his claim to British nationality, eg. naturalisation or registration certificate.
  • The mother's long birth certificate, or if born outside the United Kingdom documentary evidence of her claim to British nationality.
  • The parents' marriage certificate and, if appropriate, evidence of the termination of any previous marriage of either parent.
  • Mother or father's British passport.

If a couple marry after the birth, as well as the documents listed above, both parents need to complete Statutory Declaration of Paternity (fee is $108 for each declaration) and the father needs to complete a domicile questionnaire. The entire application will then be sent to Nationality and Passports section for authorisation of consular registration.

We aim to register a  birth within five working days.
